About the Lucie Awards

The Lucie Award a global celebration of photographic acumen and imagination, made its debut at the Gala Awards Ceremoney on December 2003 in Los Angeles.

Douglas Kirkland stated, “The Movie industry has its Oscars and now the photography community has its Lucie’s.”

The photography community from countries around the world, gathering with luminaries from the international photography community to laud the year's most
outstanding achievements. Top IPA trophies including the New Discovery Award and International Photographer of the Year will be announced during this black-tie festivity. Special recognition for lifetime achievement will be awarded to several masters of photography in such categories as fashion, photojournalism, advertising, and fine art. The IPA Advisory Board will select and honor these masters based on lifetime contribution to the photographic arts. The previous Lucie recipiants include; Henri Cartier-Bresson, Phil Borges, Robert Evans, Ruth Bernhard, Annie Leibovitz, William Claxton, Mary Ellen Mark, Steve McCurry, Douglas Kirkland, Melvin Sokolsky, Phil Stern, Gene Trindl, R J Muna, Tim Street-Porter, Photographer of the Year - Chris Frazer-Smith and New Discovery Award - Robert Vizzini.

There are tremendous opportunities to support this event by becoming a sponsor of the Lucie Gala Awards. This high visibility opportunity can give companies exposure to tens of thousands of porfessional and amature photographers around the world.

Additionally, the IPA will be distributing a commemorative program book during Photoweek and at the Gala ceremony. This program book will contain the work of the award recipients and is an exceptional advertising opportunity. The book offers an opportunity to reach an audience in the photography, advertising, fashion, and publishing industries.

Join us for this one-of-a-kind celebration.

The Lucie statue
The statue was influenced by two photographers, Frantisek Drtikol and E. O. Hoppe. "Lucie" is the sculptural form inspired by the synthesis of two famous photographic images from the first half of the twentieth century. Taken from the Latin word, "lux" for "light", Lucie is a tribute to the influence and role light plays in photography.
